TRAVEMUENDE, GERRMANY-(26-7-2003) The tension of the last races sailed in most classes outside
Travemuende could not be over bidden, although the thrilling finish of the
cyclists in the “Tour de France” absorbed some interest in the race office
on Saturday, too. With the passage of a rain front, a nice breeze provided
the best racing conditions of the 10-day event. Not only the new World
Champion in the Hobie 14 class was crowned, but also the 29ers found it’s
European top sailors after a pretty tight finish, which ended in the jury
office. Tom Smedley/Steve Wilson from Great Britain won the title.
It was a thrilling last day on course Golf, where the Hobie 14 class found
it’s new World Champion on Saturday (July 26) within the 114th Travemuende
Week. Three races where on the schedule on the last day of racing in the
bight of Luebeck. And Thorin Zeilmaker from the Netherlands made it even
more exciting, when he fell into the water in the last race of the day. He
could grap his boat in the last moment, prevented capsizing and managed to
win the eleventh run. Zeilmaker won the world title with a comfortable
margin of 12 points in the fleet of 64 boats. Second and therefore vice
world champion became German multi-talent Frank Suchanek from Krefeld. He
just scored the fourth place in the Hobie 16 Europeans on the Neusiedler
See, Austria, a week ago. Third place went to Joachim Wegener from Hamburg,
Germany.
Tom Smedley and Steve Wilson from Great Britain, who scored third in the
just finished Worlds in Laredo, Spain, could secure the European title in
the 29er class after the last fight was fought in the protest room, bringing
Lauri Lethinen and Miikka Pennanen from Finland on second place. The world
champions David Evans and Richard Peacock (Great Britain) had to be
satisfied with bronze after a disqualification in the third last race. And
Bettini/Villambrosa (Argentia) who finished second in the worlds and lead
the ranking in Travemuende until the last day, became fourth in the end.
In the Hobie Tiger class Joerg Gosche and Christoph Bock from Luebeck,
Germany steered their catamaran faster than all other 47 competing teams
from eight nations and won the European Championship 2003 after nine races.
The vice title went to Will Howden and Cori Carmenisch starting for
Switzerland, who could defend the second place with a first in the last
start and left the third rank for Bredendiek/Froehmer from Duesseldorf,
Germany.
The high score in the Olympic single handed Laser class went to Alexander
Nikolaev. The dominating Russian took over the lead in Travemuende from the
beginning and did not give it away until the end after nine races. The
45-year old Russian won with five points ahead of second placed Thomas Endom
from Krefeld, Germany and Claus Wimmer (Bendorf, Germany). In the second
Olympic class that finished on Saturday, the winner was Danish: Emil and
Simon Toft Nielsen, followed by Felix Oehme and Julien Kleine (Hamburg,
Germany).
The title in the British dominated Musto Skiff Euro Cup was won by Richard
Stenhouse. Matthew Toone scored second and Ian Turnbull could secure third
place in the single handed trapeze dinghy. On Sunday, July 27, the 114th
Travemuende Week will finish with the semi finals and finals of the German
